Top-notch anesthesia

Anesthesia is a medical procedure that is used to make the patient feel no discomfort or pain during surgical or diagnostic procedures. There are two types of anesthesia: general anesthesia which makes the patient sleep, and local anesthesia which makes the patient relaxed but awake. During the procedure, the patient's vital functions are closely monitored to ensure their safety.
Anesthesia is crucial in performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Most procedures at Animal Hospital Postojna require sedation or anesthesia to reduce animal stress and discomfort and ensure accurate and reliable procedures.
We are a specialist veterinary clinic in which we devote ourselves almost exclusively to high-tech diagnostic procedures (CT, MR) and multi-modal treatment (surgery, radiotherapy) on a daily basis. Anesthesiology thus represents one of the key areas that we have entrusted to the management of a specialist, dr. of science in the field of anesthesiology dr. Tommaso Pilla.
We utilize a variety of anesthesia methods to ensure a personalized approach and safety, even in the most challenging cases.

The importance of pre-anesthetic examination for safe and tailored care of your pets
Before each anesthesia, we perform a thorough pre-anesthetic examination, which allows us to tailor and safely perform anesthesia procedures for each animal, considering its age, size, and health condition.
The safe and modern anesthesia techniques that we utilize
In the fields of anesthesia and pain management, our ultimate goal is to maintain the highest standards of care.
We utilize some of the most advanced techniques that are comparable to those used in modern human medicine. Our anesthesia administration methods include inhalation anesthesia, TIVA/TCI -- computer-guided total intravenous anesthesia, and local-regional anesthesia such as peripheral nerve blocks, epidural anesthesia, and spinal anesthesia. To ensure additional safety, we use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment to precisely monitor animals during anesthesia.

The course of anesthesia
To ensure a stress-free experience for your pet, we will administer sedation while you are present.
Our expert staff supervises the awakening process after anesthesia. Patients are discharged only when fully alert.
After your pet has undergone anesthesia, it's important to create a calm environment to ensure that they rest well. You should closely monitor them for the next 12-24 hours, checking for any signs of discomfort or unusual behavior. Pay attention to breathing difficulties, whimpering, or difficulty getting up. You can offer water after 1-2 hours and food after 3-4 hours. If your pet is weak, start with some water/food and gradually return to their usual feeding routine.
Trust the experts: we dispel myths and concerns about anesthesia.
Many small animal owners fear anesthesia due to unfounded beliefs. We want to reassure you that these beliefs are mistaken.
Anesthesia for pets is administered by professionals who use their knowledge, techniques, and equipment to customize the procedure to the size, age, and health condition of each animal. This ensures the highest level of safety for your pet and peace of mind for you. Our guiding principle is to provide relaxation and pain-free conditions with the lowest possible concentration of anesthetics.
We understand that every examination can bring up concerns, which we fully appreciate. Therefore, during the examination, we make it our top priority to address all of your worries and answer all of your questions. The well-being of your animals and your trust in us are of utmost importance to us.
